I have a 99 exp 4WD 4.6L. Twice now I have heard a very deep and loud buzzing type sound. Almost like the annoying noise you hear on the 70"s cars if you left your keys in the ignition. But deeper sounding and louder. Almost sounds like it is coming from underneath around the tranny or something. And just under the passenger seat just past the center of the truck. No codes, and all gauges have normal readings. Any ideas on what this could be? Rpms don't change it and it stopped on its own within about 10 seconds or so. Thanks for your input.
It does it after startup, about a mile or so after you get going. Speed and rpm doesn't change it and it is loud like a buzzer but a bit bassier. It does have rear air. But it should only do it if the air is on or the defrost right? Or does the rear have a clutch that could make that noise. I am not sure if it is the same as the one in the engine compartment or not. Thanks for the reply.
Well, there is a whole bunch of threads regarding "blend door" issues. Most people get a clicking noise from the rear A/C, perhaps this is related? Do a search for blend door and see what you come up with.
The only other things I can think of are the power lumbar in the seats powering on or maybe one of the reminder chimes is located under there and is damaged or shorting out or something...
I'd check the clearance on the heat shields on the cats. The expansion of metal through a heat-up cycle of an exhaust system can sometimes have weird sounds at certain times, but not at others.
