i need help

a friend of mine just bought an '85 ford f150 and he knows pretty much nothing about vehicles

he was told the only thing wrong was a dead batterie and no gas
well come to find out it had a gas leak and it was so bad we ended up taking off the gas tank and empting it i would hardly call 12 gallons in a 24 gallon tank no gas

that is where his problems started

me and one of his friends decided to take a look at the engine after that and found a lot of probs this truck has been sitting unused for over a year and most of its parts are almost completely rusted through including the before mentioned gas tank

to make a long story short all fluids in the truck have gone bad and we have to clear out all said fluids

as well as change all plugs seals and replace the head gaskets thank god we don't have to replace the intake manifold!!

from what i can tell this truck needs a complete overhaul and my friend is quite crestfallen because he was told it was road worthy and just spent a lot of money on a useless vehicle and as far as i can tell he'll be spending a whole lot more money to get it road worthy

as we go along in checking all systems suchas all wiring, hoses, plugs, exaust system, transmission, starter, radiator, all belt and resiviors i may need advice on a few things

(oh and it needs new tires and suspension too and has no bed on it ) i want to get this truck back to its original glory so i'm sure i'll need alot of help from ppl who have worked with this vehicle before

thankyou for your time

Welcome aboard.
It sounds like a real mess, but with patience and a willingness to learn you'll make good progress.
This is the best forum for things having to do with everything but the engine. For the engine jump over to the forum for your particular engine.
Try to keep each question limited to any one issue, not six questions.
Oh, and next time.....don't believe what people tell you, especially with a used car.
I think I could have just looked at this puppy and told you it needed lots of work.

Welcome

Sounds like you have some work cut out for you... I would just start with an oil change just to make sure its not full of water that will take out bearings quickly.
Then see about getting it running. You say you need to replace head gaskets but not intake? Might as well do everything. Not sure how you know it needs head gaskets if its not running, or did I misunderstand. All the rest of the parts are replaceable some cheaper than others. Just keep smiling about it
Have a good day
Duncan
