Got a 1999 V10 F-250 with 93K miles. Friday night the wife and I headed up to the mountains outside of Kingman, AZ for a getaway. I was pulling my 25ft Prowler travel trailer. Climbing up hill for quite a while in 2nd gear going about 25 mph for about 20 minutes going from 3500ft to 6500ft. Very steap. When we got to the mountain park we stop and payed our money. I noticed smoke in the headlights. I then backed up a little, and oil was all over the ground. Quite a bit of transmission oil was seaping out of a little rubber plug under the bell housing. I was like oh crap! We then parked for the night and spent our weekend. I checked the transmission oil level before we hit the road and it read a little full. (about 3/4 inch above the crosshaches and the oil wasn't burnt). Coming home was no problem. Not a drop at the gas station. Mostly all down hill the way home. Got home and one little drop fell on my driveway. I checked the level again and still is reading too much oil Anyone have a idea what might be causing the leak? Maybe over filled? Or got over heated going up that hill I'm thinking a seal as gone bad. I'd appreicate any feedback. Thanks.
Sounds like to me that it is overfilled and when it is hot is pushing past the front seal. If it is overfilled I would get it lowered a bit. Then take it for a good run and check it again. Be sure to clean off what had dripped already so it is easy to see if you are getting more fluid leaking.
When was it last serviced? Right before the trip?
Are you checking the fluid while in 'park' and the tranny is hot?
don't know when the trans was ever serviced. I bought it used over a year ago. Yes I checked the trans in park while idling. So far hasn't dripped anything. I did clean off that area where the oil was coming from. I'm keeping a close eye on it.
