Up until my 2006 6.0 had 14,000 miles my MPG readings were really in the toilet. Empty I'd get maybe 10-12 MPG and with my 2700# camper in the box I'd be lucky to get 9-10. Then my brother took a look at the paper air filter and commented that he couldn't understand how the turbo was breathing? It really must be working hard to suck air in throgh that thing. So, we replaced the Ford filter with a new AIRAID. My MPG went up to 13.5 and stayed there. I was really pretty happy as that represented about a 30% increase in economy - which, as I think about it, may be an oxymoron. Anyway, for the next 2,000 miles I motored along getting my 13 +/_.
At 16,500 I topped off and was amazed to see the dash MPG monitor jump up to 15 almost immediately and slowly moved up to 17 within the next 100 miles at a constant 60 MPH on the interstate. I did a paper/pencil check at the next fuel stop and discovered the mileage was actually hovering around 15.5. Still that made me happy when I'm paying almost $3/gal for diesel.
Now, at 18,500 around the local area I'm back down to 14.5.
renaissanceman: I saw a drop of 2 mpg recently. I changed the fuel filters, but they were clean. However, right after that my mileage came back up. I really think that some of my loss had to do with lower grade fuel that has now come back up in quality.
Other than that, my mpg's have remained very constant - about 18 (19.5 on the lie o meter). I did notice a little gain after 30K (break in). I'm nearing 50K miles now.
If your tires, air filter and fuel filters are all correct, clean and constant, then I would think your mpg's should remain fairly constant. The only thing you cannot control is fuel quality and cetane levels.
By the way - I've got 12,000 miles on the new flash and have not noticed any change except maybe a little quiter at cold start.
112233.... The same thing hppened to my 04 CC SD. After flash the mileage went don 5mpg and power went in the tank. I run a SC Flshpaq and Im getting ready to stack a Quadzilla on top of it to get some power back. Its either that or a new truck. I will post when its done.
namreh - so in your opinion my truck still isn't broke in yet? SOme how I had the impression tha tthe break in period was around 15K.
Is there any real info on the break-in or is it mostly conventional wisdom and fantasy?
Sorry - I pulled 30K from my head. I don't think there is an official break-in period but it comes from other posts I remember reading here. I did notice the change around 30K, however, so between the other posts and my experience, it therefore is the official break in number (that's my story and I'm stickin to it!).
the 6.0 is very sensitive to fuel quality and cetane levels. If you will use a good additive( Stanadyne, or the Ford additive) you will see a difference in your fuel mileage. Thats why the new motor is coming , the governments trying to standardize fuel. Until that happens, the only recourse is the additives
