Hi Everyone
Getting ready for state inspection , I pulled the rear axle to check the brakes and all was ok . when I went to slide the axle back in it will not go back in on one side , all but 1 inch ????? If you turn the axle the drive shaft an other wheel turns freely . I pulled the inspection cover only to find out you can't see a thing. Anyone have any ideas on this , it was running great until I pulled the axle . This is a 1975 F-250 I believe to be posi as when you turn one wheel the other turns the same way , and if you only jack up one side you can not turn the other wheel at all.
Any help would be greatly appricated and HAVE A GREAT EASTER
I had the same problem when I put my Dana back together. What I did was to try to lift the end up (the far end) while pushing it in and rotating it slightly. I found that I had to mess around a couple of times to get it to slide in nicely. And when I did that the bolt holes did not line up, so I just did it again until they did.
I don't know the technical name for it, but ther must be some lind of lip or something (maybe the inner bearings?) that it has to slide over.
Good luck.
the posi set up has two spider gears on one side or a 9 inch trac lco does. i have yet to tear a d60 trac loc apart and i have one in the garage but they must work in the same way becuase they have clutches. what i'm getting at is the inner gear has slipped out of location. is it the axle that goes in on the ring gear side of the axle? if so then the inner gear is out of place but i wouldn't expect that to happen if your clutchs are good and you seem to say its in good working order. if you rotate the carrier around you should be able to seee something.
O.K. 4 hours later I have determined from a shop manual I have the Model 70 2 piece case Four Pinion Limited-Slip Differential if this helps anyone who may have info that may help me.
I have tried loosening the bearing caps and moving the carrier around with a small bar while a friend attempts to slide the axle in but no luck . It is defentally going in far enough to start into the splines of the axle shaft as I can turn the axle and the drive shaft turns . I still cannot get it in the last 1" . I would really think that if its in far enough to turn the drive shaft it would be in far enough to be past all the clutches if any were broke and had fallen 1/2 way down plugging the hole for the shaft .
Again any help would be appricated.
Thanks and have a great day

i think you are on the right track. ive had diffs apart many times, and sometimes they take a bit of wiggling and rotating of the driveshaft each way to get the axles to go in all the way. im betting you dont have the carrier componants all aligned. you may have to assemble the side that is all the way in,and put the tire on,an put that side on the ground.then rotatate the driveshaft a tiny bit until all the side gears, and clutchs line up.then the axle should slide in the rest of the way.if you just rotate the drive shaft, you only will rotate the complete carrier, not moving the axles independantly.this wont help line up the splines in the diff.thats the reason for assembling the one side and putting it down on the ground with the weight of the truck on it. it may take a bit,if you have a buddy helping rotate the drive shaft,as you wiggle the axle,it should go in. hope this helps you.HAPPY EASTER-billy
You shouldn't have to loosen the carrier bearing caps to get the axle back in. You may end up having to pull the carrier and take it apart to realign the inner clutch spider gear.
This is to Hotroddually THANKS you saved the day . I lowered the passerger side to the ground threw a pipe wrench on the drive shaft and turned it a little and my son pushed it in place . Going to auto parts for posi lube .
