83 460 questions

I have a 83 f250. I removed the smog stuff and dueled the exhaust. I just put on a 770 truck avenger. I need to know what to buy next. Intake manifold or good headers? In the furture I'm going to buy a long block. Should I buy the same year block w/ smog crank or get an earlier year w/ no smog crank. What the deal with the smog crank? Would an ealier year fit? I'm also confussed about the vac. line for the dist. I have a stock dist. should I hook it up the the ported line off the carb or hook it up to the manifold? Also, setting the float levels. I set them untill gas just came out the sight holes should I put the caps back on and then turn the floats up 3 more flats? thanx daverod

Besides weight the intake manifold is good. Next step, timing Chain Colyes or S.A. Gear installed straight up or +4 if you tow. Then Crane dist advance kit. Then ignition Crane Hi-6 box with LX-92 coil. Then Headers.

I heard somewhere that the vac on the carb wasn't strong enough to work the springs on a stock dist? I have a new timing chain I dont know if it was installed straight up or +4. Why a new dist. advance kit?

I've heard you need 38 deg initial advance for best performance - I'm going to have to do this too.

Daverod the spings in the dist. work via centifugal force the vacuum advance is only a digapram. If the dist is worn out the vacuum might not have enough force on the digapram to move it. But that only helps fuel and lower HC(smog) at crusie. For power you want to change the spings to adjust mechanical total timing.

"I've heard you need 38 deg initial advance for best performance"

Saying Intial in that statment means idle. I think you heard 38 deg total timing. And yes because the combustion chamber is not very effecient 38 degrees will give you the best hp. But u have to take in account how soon u want TT(Total Timing). Light car big motor TT earily say 1800(Race) 2600(Street) Big car small motor TT 3200(Race) 3800(Street). Truck that dosen't tow TT 2800-3000 Truck that tows 3600-4000. Just some examples

Jay, Whats so bad with the dist. I have ? I had a new chain put on about a year ago. Do they usally put the gear on straight up? Is there a difference in the type of gears? What advantage does the crane dist. , box , coil give me above the stock one? I never gave the ignition much thought, everyone says headers and intake. I've been researching it and I'm starting to see how it works. I'm still learning though. If you say I need a new dist. I'm sure I do. I would just like to know why. You seem to know a lot about it. Any thoughts on the matter would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time. Daverod

If I'm going to change the timing gear to a pre 71 would that be a good time to put in a new cam? The one I have now is stock. The plan is a preformer manifold, headers, 770 truck avenger, pre 71 gear, what would be a good cam? Should I just go with the one that is matched for the intake? I can't seem to find a pre 71 gear chain for a 460? Thanx Daverod
