tailgate compatibility again plus an extra!

found a '78 tailgate that is in decent shape w/o glass. Son has '83- know it has different catches but same shape- is it possible to change out.

Also, if not, I can get the gate for $100. Like i said it's decent- very little rust but it would have to be treated to keep it that way which I can do.

Is it worth it to pick up and save...they seem to be very rare.

Also found one at an online parts store- on sale for around $255.00 (plus shipping. Is anyone interested? Seems like a good deal as skins can cost that.

just ?? and FYI

To the best of my knowledge, nothing from the bodies of the 78-79 models will easily swap to the 1980+ models. The 78/79's were truly the BIG Broncos as they were a few inches larger in just about every direction when it came to the body.

When it comes to tailgates, take what you can get. Worst case scenario, you store one you can't use until you find someone with one you cna use and you swap.

yea, was wondering if the tailgates are that hard to find and I will be building a 78 someday so I'll pick it up. 78-82 use the same gate and I think the only difference after that is the latch and pin location. I've owned a 78 and 79 and they are awesome- my new 400 build would really go well in one!!

if you ever find a tailgate in good condition, grab it while you can, glass or not. they are hard to find, some one will always want one. I paid $100 for a early 80s tailgate, little rust, no glass. Latches were different but in same location and rear switch interlock was different. Bondo along bottom edge and som paint, works great.
