pre or post 79 460

Is there an easy way to tell the difference between an internal vs. an externally balanced 460 other than casting numbers?

counterweigth behind balancer

externally balanced engines have a sledge, the other doesnt.

When you say sledge, is this the counterweight on the balancer?

its the counterwieght behind the balancer.

sorry to jump

Is there any problems with this during a rebuild as per se the machine shop or is it just up to you to put the harmonic balancer back on. tha reason I ask is that I am doing a rebuild I have two engines one with one without? So I figure I better ask now thanks

Hello, depends on what type of 460ci you are planning to build, if its going to be a High revving 460ci it would be best to go for a INTERNAL balance engine, but if its going to be a every day driver not seeing over 6'000 revs a EXTERNALY balanced 460ci will be fine . Jamie. Australia
