I've broken the right front u-joint on my 87 4x4. I have removed the brakes, axel lock nuts and everything else that looks like it can be taken off, but i can't get the axle yoke out. I have a repair manual but still can seem to understand. Any tricks?
You've removed everything that looks like it can be taken off, but it won't come out? Does this mean that the knuckle is bare, or, as suggested by Help I M Stuck, that you've still got to get the spindle off? Also, you need to take off the clamps/boot at the slip joint so the outer end of the axle shaft can slide out through the knuckle. The inner half (aka stub shaft) of the passenger side is held in the diff by a C-clip. If you need to get the stub shaft out, then you have to get inside the differential to remove this C-clip, first.
I don't know what repair manual you're working from, but I found the instrructions in Haynes and Chiltons to be adequate for this job. Can you pin down exactly which step in the process you are stuck at?
that outter shaft will come apart once you take the clamp off that boot..it's gonna take some prying..i took a pry bar and where you've taken the spindle off i stuck the prybar there in between the ujoint and pryed and tugged and used some choice words before it finally came out..just make sure to grease the end before you stick it back in to make it easy to slide back in and get back out if ever needed.
