fuel gauge sending unit

Sounds like the sending unit is going bad. You will have to take out the FMU (fuel module unit is the fuel pump and fuel sending unit) out of the tank to change the sending unit. There are several threads on this forum that talk about the best way to get this out. The good news is the sender is under $50 but is a pain to replace.
I need to replace mine for the same reason but will replace the pump while I have the tank open. I have about 220,000 on my stock pumps/sending units and don't want to have to go back in 6 months later for a bad pump

another good tip on the pre 1990 models (without the FDM fuel delivery module in tank) is to change out the selector valve on the frame rail. I had a six port cause i had dual tanks, but i eliminated the rear and bought a 3 port from ford for about 45.00. ive read that from the factory they have a filter in the bottom, but when they started clogging up they made the replacement selector ports filterless. mine was clogged when doing the tank deal, and i grounded my fuel pump relay, all pumps worked good, but after a lot of trial and error i found my selector valve to be clogged.
