I have a 1979 F-250 and it has a 390 with a C6. I have found a carbed 460 and a C6 auto with it for 500 bucks. What would I have to do to swap it in besides mounts headers, and exhaust?
I just did this swap last summer, replacing my '66 352 and 3 speed with a 460/C-6.
Couple of questions are in order here, first.
390 in a '79? I assume it is a later transplant? What was in there before?
Is it a car or a truck 460/C-6 combination? IT WILL MAKE AN IMPORTANT DIFFERENCE, and add additional conversions you need to be concerned about.
I'll assume it is a truck setup for now.
You will need all the brackets, pulleys and front engine stuff. Upper radiator hose will need to be adapted.
Accelerator linkage should fit.
Power steering pump and alternator will fit existing brackets (if it is a truck setup.)
Transmission will bolt up factory, if you use the factory engine mounts - and they are hard to find. If you find a second set, get them and sell them for a C-note plus on E-bay.
Driveline should not require adjustment, if the transmissions have the same output shafts.
Radiator should have the right size outlets.
I think there is more, but I cannot recall it at the moment.
You don't need headers! Truck exhaust manifolds and a short piece of exhaust pipe will connect your existing exhaust system to the 460. 100% all Ford bolt in deal. E-bay and the junk yard for all the brackets, manifolds and mounts you need. Truck or Van oil pan, pump and pickup will help but the car front sump pan will work fine.
