OK this one has probably been beatin to death but...........I have a 99 f250 SD, I have read that there is a plug for the brakes (trailer brake) I have searched high and low on this truck and cant find a free plug. My idea is that the previous owner installed the plug and when he sold the truck he just cut out the brake controller. I have found a plug that has four wire connected to it, it has been taped up so not to short out any thing. The plug is located to the right of the gas pedal, kinda up beside the little "pocket" in the dash or console area ......what ever it is called. I geusss my question is how do i know? What color should the wires be comming out of this plug? It looks like it is a ford plug?
It sounds like you're looking at the right plug. Go to the Prodigy or TAP site, and review the online installation instructions for wire colors. There are four, but I can't remember for sure what they are. The location your describe is spot on.
If that's the right plug it will be gray or white, have 6 connectors (3 over 3), and have 5 wires connected to it (1 will be a heavy blue wire). The wires are for power, ground, brake light switch cold side, power back to the trailer (blue), and instrument lights.
I just did my 99 as well. Make sure you have fuse #28 and #16 (the large fuses) in the fuse box under the hood. Mine were not there. One is for the brake and the other is for power to your trailer battery
