Have my motor in pieces doing a reseal/ refresh and I'm stuck at the bolt that hold the harmonic balancer to the crank since turning the bolt spins the crank [much easier than I'd thought]. How do I keep the crank from spinning so I can get the bolt out? My dad always jammed something through the flywheel in such circumstances... but I've seen that damage parts too ... any suggestions??
2nd: does the bolt come out "standard", aka counter-clockwise when standing in front of the engine, or is it reversed??
If it is standard shift, put it in gear (high) have some one step on the brakes.
The bolt is standard thread, comes out the normal way. If it is an automatic -try a block of wood between the flywheel teeth and the bell housing. If the engine is out or in the truck and there are no rods in it jam a block of wood between one of the rod throws and the block.
An impact wrench is the best way to get it out. It'll pop right off that way. You'll need a balancer puller to get the balancer off after you get the bolt off.
