Stumped
'91 F-150. 300cu 5-sp, 92,200mi. Been sitting a few months. Nice truck ......altta life left....got the truck, (free). Daily driver prior to its' vacation. Charged the battery. As soon as battery was connected, dash lights such as ....check engine, brake etc are on... just like turning the key to on position. It won't start. Turn the key......no clicks, no noise, no nothing. New ignition switch...no joy there either. Planning new starter solenoid and ignition interupter. No key..........no problem..the dash lights are still on! Oh..... by the way the truck would not shut off via ignition when it was a daily driver. As per the previous owner. (My cousin the pharmacist).
I've owned and maintained Ford's since I was a kid but never ran into this.
When you turn the key and nothing happens...do any of the dash lights go off when you have the key turned to the start position? If yes then everything seems to be connected OK. If no then you have some sort of starter kill somewhere. Could be from an alarm (but you would probably know that). Could be anywhere else. You can also test the positive side of the coil to see if there is voltage there when the key is in the ON position. That will tell you how far the signal is getting from the key. Also, on the fuel rail you should see a valve (just like you see on a bicycle tire to fill it with air). If you take something skinny (and preferably plastic) and press on the center of that valge then gas should shoot up a couple feet. This will tell you if the key is turning on the relay for the fuel pump. You can also listen for the fuel pump when the key is turned on...you will hear a whining for about 2 seconds.
If these check out then you have what it takes to start the truck, it then might be something with the starter and how the electrical signal gets to the starter to turn it on. The only thing I have done with the starter is replace the whole starter, I haven't had to troubleshoot any relays with the starting system.
Good luck
