Wheel bearing assembly

Wheel bearing assembly

I just insatlled a new wheel bearing assembly in my late 99 f350 srw 4x4. I was wondering if they are supposed to be very tight at first. Seems like there is so much friction that it turns the drive shaft with the hubs unlocked. It appeared to be pregreased and there is no burning smell. I am stumped. Im hoping it will loosen up over time.

Doesn't sound correct to me. The needle bearing in the center of the hub supports the axle, and the 4x4 hub locks the axle to the wheel hub, basically. I would think it should spin with very little drag if the hubs are unlocked. I would check a little closer, even if it means removing the 4x4 hub to check for drag without it.

I would be more concerned if it felt loose when you installed it. When new, they are suppose to feel tight simply because they are new. As long as you torqued everything to factory specs and lubed the needle bearings good, you shouldn't have any problems. I've replaced both hub assemblies on my '01 and both of them felt the same as you described when new.
