i did a copression test on my 390 yesterday and i had a cyl, that was only 30 lbs. kinda figured that something was wrong as i could hear it weeze when i walked by the exhaust. Been wanting to put a new engine in there for a couplas years now so i guess it's time/ i ordered a crate 390 with polished heads, tuned and balanced, with a RV cam. am going to install a new dist. and carb. am going to put a Edelbrock carb on it and my question to the guru's is , what size would be the best for this engine. i dont think a 600 cfm is big enough, or is it. ? a 650 or 700 cfm. wadia think is the better one to use? I have a 67 ford fairlain 390 hi-pro in my truck with headers and I have the Elberbrock 600cfm on mine and it runs like a top. The 600cfm is a good match to the 390. After puttin it on my truck the gas milage went from like 10mpg to almost 20mpg. I love that carb.
Dutch, I bet you had a valve sinking into the head because of non hardened guides.
The Edelbrock is a set it and forget it carb, but you probably can find a better one for your truck. I currently have a 390 cfm Holley on my truck that is getting better mps and darn near the same performance as a 1406 Edel. my 2
Hey guys coudn't help but see your responses to adding the Edelbrock. I to have a 390 in my 65 F100 and am going to put the 600 cfm Edelbrock on. Do any of you know wich port the distrubuter vacuum line goes to? I thought it was the passenger side, but the edelbrock book states it depends on if the vacuum advace is timed (no vacuum at idle) our constant which would be the drivers side port. Any help would be greatly appriciated.

You want to hook it up to the port that has no vacuum at idle.
Hey guys, been a long time since i posted this. i ended up sending the engine to Seattle for a major, like Jowilker said it had three valves that were on their last leg among other things. the whole cabootle was worn out so i ordered a complete engine, carb and elec. ignition, RV cam, ported and polished and tunes, they dynoed it before sending it back. ended up at the 3500 buck range. runs really well and it'll scare the hell otta ya if you keep your foot in it. anyway now with the price of gas i wish now that i would have put the money to better use , like a 300 six.
