Towing capacity

Just bought a 1999 F350 super duty 5.4 4wd to tow an 11000# fifth tralier.I looked on the hitch and it says 10000#towing maximum, this doesnt sound right.Anybody know or know how to get the actual towing capacity?

You could double check the manual but that sounds about right. Keep in mind that is load-leveling rating only. You are really at liberty with whatever the hitch is rated for. You may be able to handle that load on a fifth wheel tow.

raptor_44,

Here is a link to the 2002 SD Towing Guide (farthest back i could locate one)

http://www.fleet.ford.com/showroom/r...D_F250_350.pdf

It lists 2002 F350 with 5.4L truck rated to tow a trailer with Max GVW of 7100 - 9400 lbs depending on configuration.
Your older super duty will not be rated higher than this. Also Max GCVW is 13,500 - 15,000 depending on your trucks configuration. Look on the B-pillar sticker for your trucks GVW rating.

Looks like your trailer is to large for your truck to handle.

Hope this helps

FYI,
Year Make Model Engine Tow Limit
1999 Ford Truck F-350 Crew-Cab 4x4 5.4 V-8 #9800lb
Requires 4.10:1 axle ratio.
Requires Trailer Towing Package.
Requires weight-distributing hitch.
A higher tow rating is listed for pickups that tow fifth-wheel trailers.

Also keep in mind...The highest tow rating of any engine combo 7.3/6.8 included was 10000lb in 99...

Chris..

Chris..
Those are conventional towing ratings...which are limited by the weight rating on the receiver itself...10K

He has a fifth wheel which has nothing to do with conventional ratings!

Apparently you dont understand my point...

You have given NO valid info on Fifth wheel towing specs...what makes you think he wld be overloaded...

Fifth wheel specs have nothing to do with conventional towing specs...generally fifth wheel specs are much higher than conv. towing specs!!

fomocofan,

Both myself and biz4two posted links to the trailer towing guides back to 2002, the 1999 models were not rated heavier than this, they were equal to or less. The towing guides specify both TT & 5th wheel. 5th wheel ratings at 7100-9400 depending on truck configuration. Max GCVW of 13500-15000 depending on configuration. Based on these numbers it appears the trailer he wants to pull is to big for his truck.

If he has a 3:73 rear end (per the chart given above) under fifth wheel he can pull 7500# With a 4:10 rear end he is allowed 9000# If automatic. If he has a manual transmission subtract 100# each.

I understand, and agree...

I was just making a pioint of his info on conventional towing is useless in this discussion and that the 10K max referred to is based on the rating on the hitch itself!
