I have some type of major electrical problem on my 99 350 diesel. To start with I got up one morning last week and my batteries were completely dead no way would they start the truck. I hadn’t noticed any problems on the trip home the night before. They were old so I decided to go ahead and replace them. Put 2 new batteries in and the truck starts fine the volt gage shows closer to 18 volts than 8 (the factory gage has nothing in the middle). I drive to work for a couple of days and everything is fine. Coming home on the 3rd day I notice the volt meter down around the 10 volt mark so I stop and buy a rebuilt alternator thinking this has crapped out now. Install this, charge the batteries and everything is fine for about 3 or 4 days. Get up this morning start the truck, everything looks good. When I almost get to work I notice the volt meter around 10 volts again, get to work and the batteries fricking are dead again. Has anyone had this type of problem before? Is there something else that controls the alternator?
Sounds like the alternator is not doing its job. Around here most parts stores will do a free check. If it checks good, then you know to start tracing the charging systems wiring. One place to start is the plugs at the alternator itself. Could be a bad connection or broken wire. To save time and headaches, have your alternator checked first. I have seen bad ones out of the box. Good luck.
I Am Currently Experiencing The Same Issue With My 2000psd....twin Alternator/battery Set-up. Just Dropped All Charging In The Truck Twice While I Was Driving....dead Truck...so I:
Installed Two New Alternators, Batteries And Took Truck To Ford Stealership. They Told Me It Was The Pcm. Well, Had That Replaced Twice Too. ( Same Condition Occured ) And Now I Am Blowing A Fuse To My Instrument Cluster....i Took Apart Bulkhead Harness (s) And Cleaned....visually Checked Wiring. The Next Step For Me Is To Do A Point To Point Check. ( Dealership Said They Inspected Wiring Too...sure )
Not Much For Help Because I Am In The Same Situation You Are In!
Any Help Out There Would Be Appreciated!!!!
I found my problem yesterday. on the right fender there is a wiring plug with a green 20 or 22 gage jumper pluged into the end of it. A mouse had gotten up under the hood and made a home. In the process of getting all warm and toasty he/she chewed this little jumper in two. I repaired the wire and all is working like new.
