Ok, just returned from a 500 mile trip to Lake Hartwell towing my 391xt Ranger with the 2000 Excursion, 5.4 motor, 3.73 rear end.
13.2 mpg for trip. Speeds 60-70 mph. AC on, Interstate all the way. Great driving and great handling.
Almost in a wreck when an 18 wheeler came up too fast on a auto going 35mph. He slammed on the brakes, lots of blue smoke. I hit the brakes hard. The EX never waivered. Controled the emergency braking like a champ.
That is why I drive the Excursion.
Yeah the V-8 is a little slow, but overall I am happy with it. In third gear ( no overdrive on those hills) it pulls very well.
There are some great mods you can do to improve the 5.4 for towing, including: headers/exhaust, chip, intake (K&N, MAF sensor, larger Throttle Body), electric fans, pullys. I have modified my '01 5.4 expedition with same and am very very impressed with its torque and towing ability
Pull 3 horse trailer with almost 4,000 pounds of horses, 1,000 pounds of gear etc plus whats in ex and I get 15-19 depending on speed. I usually cruise 55-60 and if I am just highway the ex kicks mileage butt. i can get 17 mpg
My braking is doable but will be replacing ex pretty soon. almost 200,000 miles and its starting to show its age performance wise
