Ovito, I'll 2nd Tims' Welcome to FTE
I too am an old gear/motor head. In fact I went from the bottom to nearly the top position in the Automotive industry, even having my own shop. The biggest error older "motorheads" seem to make is getting overwhelmed by the influx of "Digital Technology" and advent of all the newer methodologies. BUT I suggest sticking to the basics, keeping things simple by not overthinking, and keeping in mind the fundamental premise Less is More!
As you discovered, you already knew the fix but overthought the problem.
Digital Technology is just another system or tool. It cannot do anything but handle copious amounts of information and work within its' ROM. Digi Tech will fix nothing and often can not recognize basic mechanical failures because they are not written into the ROM and there are no sensors to detect them.
If a timing gear/chain fails the "Computer" can not recognize it, or will not create a D-Code about it. But timing is a basic, a fundamental, whether it is a chain, belt or a gear. The technician should be able to recognize that, just as you did with the Vacuum Leak. This Timing chain thing was my epiphany in the late 70s when the ECM/ ECU driven systems were just starting to appear.

Yes, I've noticed the "Over Diagnosed Syndrome" is rampant these days. With all the high tech gizmos we assume the fault must be something equally exotic when in fact, most problems are rather simple in nature. We tend to skip the mundane possibilities in our haste to get to the more exciting high tech stuff.
