It's like this...as he said, Greed. AND as more people require gasoline and home heating fuel, they STILL have to have x amount of crude to make diesel. Why make cheap diesel from the 60-65 dollar a barrel crude when they more bucks on gas and heating oil. Now they can say it's from a shortage of oil, and not greed! Get it?
Diesel and regular are getting pretty close lately. I second the greed part as well, record profits for Big Oil last quarter.
Because they can..... I watch the gas stations near work and people won't cross the street if gas is .10-.15 cents a gal less. We are own worst emeny. Kinda sad
Hey Fuel is still more than reg. gas here in San Antonio, Tx, and it's starting to look like a company named Valero is working towards a take over of all gas stations around here. What gets me is that the same company has stores with prices varying as much as .15 cents, so there's some greed right here in home town USA to go a long with the Corprate world, they all need a kick in the b@$#'s. My 2 cents.
It's not greed folks. Low Sulfur diesel becomes a hard reality in a couple of months and most if not all pipelines and fuel terminals have stopped taking the old 500ppm stuff and are now taking only the the new 15ppm fuel. Many refiners opted not to invest in the new equipment required to produce the new lower sulfur diesel. Consequently, our capacity has been permanently lowered a bit.
Another problem has been that BP Texas City is only now beginning to come back on line after Hurricane Rita. They had a pretty bad fire on an Isomerization unit about a year ago and took a beating form the FEDS over it. They took the Rita opportunity to just shutdown and get everything addressed. If greed was a motive, they would have kept it running through the hurricane and never shut down. This is a 500 thousand BBL/day refinery (third largest in the US). Having this refinery back will help.
Energy needs for China and India are growing as their manufacturing bases continue to expand. This has ben one of the big driver's for the jump in crude prices but has nothing to do really with the spread between reg. and diesel prices but it does account for the higher prices in general.
Europe has a much higher percentage of diesel vehicles than we do. Europe is also the only other decent source for clean diesel. Problem is, their diesel prodcution is running at close to maximum capacity now. In years past, there was additional diesel capacity their and much of this additional capacity was shipped here which helped to keep diesel prices lower.
Bottom line, there just isn't much fat in the capacity to produce diesel any longer and a new refinery is smply cost prohibitive in the US.

You're not kidding about the "Valero Takeover"
Though I drove by one of the station around my house today and diesel was about 14 cents cheaper than regular unleaded. 2.55 for #2 /2.69 for 87
The LA Times reported yesterday that the oil company profits are higher than they have ever been. While texan2004 has very valid points, I beg to differ a little. And if you shop at ChinaMart and other big box retailers, you are only fueling the China fire. Greed on our own part (wanting to get the most for the least, produced at the least cost but making the highest profit) is an underlying reason China and India are sucking up all the oil. They produce the goods, we buy them cheap. BTW, ChinaMart is pushing for Mexico to build a new port just south of San Diego. This is so they can continue to make more money by reducing the shipping cost to Los Angeles (labor cost, that is). Underpaid Mexicans will unload the boats, and then overlaiden poorly maintained trucks will bring the goods to the US where they will be distributed by US trucks. This is why Bush is pushing for trucks from Mexico to be allowed in the US. It's all part of the "big plan" to reduce cost in the name of profit, and selling out the US labor force.
All of the information I have seen lately shows that the US Government makes more "profit" off of oil (from gas taxes) then the oil companies make. The government makes many billions of dollars more then the oil companies EVERY year. So....before anyone goes "all out" after the oil companies and calling them greedy they should look to the government "greed" 1st. I don't like the higher prices any more then anyone else but the oil companies are NOT the "main" problem....The US Government is.....
