Bright Lime Dilemma

I will very soon begin the frame off restoration of my 73. However, I have a dilemma that I need some help to resolve. It's the color of the truck. Currently, the truck is the original color, Bright Lime (Code 4), check my gallery for some pictures. I don't like the color very much and wouldn't paint it that color if it wasn't original to the truck. I've inherited the truck from my wife's grandfather who is living. Do I change the color?

Pros and Cons:
  • I don't like the color, but it is original to the truck and the entire family recognizes the "Yella Truck". (I want them to like it when I'm done)
  • Ford only used Bright Lime on the trucks one year (1973) so it is somewhat rare and very distinctive.
  • Did I mention I don't like the color?
  • Future restorations will also have to be very involved (painting everything)
I know some of you will say "just paint it the color you want to, after all, it's your truck, your work and your money". There is more to it than that and I'm just trying to make a well informed decision that isn't that selfish. I would appreciate any feedback or advice you have to offer.

Bruce

If you are keeping the truck original, you ought to keep the same colour as well. I'll bet that ugly colour gorws on you.

When I first read 'lime' I thought it was going to be a weird neon green color, but since it is really more of a yellow it doesn't look too bad. If it were my truck, by the time I had the money to paint it some other color, the yellow would have already grown on me. If you do want to keep it original, I think a new paint job of the same color would make it look much better than the current 30 year old faded yellow and would be a lot easier than a complete color change.

But as you mentioned yourself, it's your truck and do what you want with it

Wow - I didn't think I would but I like that color. It doesn't make much sense to do all that work if you don't like it though. If it were mine I would keep the color and add different mouldings - it needs more chrome.

Thanks for the feedback. If you ever see a 73 Longbed 2WD in Bright Lime, you'll know it's me!

If that was a 1 year only color, it would be worth it to keep it for that reason alone. My 79 is Light Jade and I've often thought about a color change as well, but have decided to keep it the original color, for the following reasons;

It's easy to spot in a parking lot.
Nobody would want to steal it.
If they did steal it, it would be easy to find.
or
If they did steal it, they would probably return it once they sobered up.

My father bought it new and gave it to me when he bought his next new truck. (rather than trading it in) And since I've been driving it for the past 20+ years, it kinda has it's own identity now. Besides, I like having something different and not like the modern cookie cutter cars of today that look all the same. I can't tell you how many people I wave at, thinking they're someone else, because their cars are similar.

Why not do some subtle graphics on it to make it more pleasing to YOUR eye ?

That way the colour is original and graphics will bring it into the next millenium.
