PowerStroke versus IDI

I cant see, to find out what the best of the two really are. I am looking for either an IDI or an older powerstroke. I am concerned about Reliability and being able to pile the miles on it-not so much about towing capacity.

If your choice is between a PSD and an IDI I would definetely recommend the IDI, here is why:

1, IDI is low tech, no electronics or computers and are easy to work on.
2, IDI's are proven to go 400,000 miles no problem if looked after a little bit (oil changes, air and fuel filter changes, coolant treatement).
3, IDI milage can be similar or better than PSD's (although milage does depends a lot on your driving style)
4, IDI fuel systems are relatively cheap to fix. An injector will cost you $35 vs. $350 for a PSD.
5, You can still start a standard IDI by rolling it down the hill if your starter goes bad, I have done it in a pinch.
6, You can buy a IDI with 200,000 miles on it for $5,000 vs. a new PSD for $55,000.

The old IDI's have proven very reliable, that is why there is still so many of them on the road today.

I have both. Get an IDI with a stick. Can't beat them. Dependable and long lasting.

I have an 86 with around 160k and its in need of glow plugs and a clutch but it sat for almost 4 years and It started today on the first try.

A buddy of mine has a '90 and just reciently rebuilt the 7.3 after about 1mill on the odometer, original clutch lasted about 10k longer than that.

I own both and especially since you said not much towing I would go with the IDI, the only way to go PSD is an newer one but you said an older one. You cannot come out with an older PSD, but an older IDI is just like new. You can put hundred of thousands of miles on both, but fix anything in the IDI so much easier.

The original owner put on over 500,000 and at some point put in a drop in motor. Both privious owners towed horse trailers. Odometer has not worked in some time but truck has well over 600,000 miles. I purchased truck 3 years ago for 2k needed brake work ,a vacume pump did the trick. Truck is a CC xlt dually with 4.10 rear, engine is stock. I did purchase a turbo but never got it installed. The truck runs great but does need work. Instead of putting more money into it I got a 94 idi turbo CC dually 4.10 for 5 speed $3300. Same truck just newer and with a factory turbo. yes the turbo makes a big difference when towing
