Looks like a heater core to me.

You could call it a dealer option high output external heater core.

Talking

It's an Evaporator Coil from a window/wall shaker A/C that Rube Goldberg got when he was out Dumpster Diving. Kick is he sold it to somebody else for a R&R Heater core.
Is this too much or what?

I guess he didn't have the $35 to buy an aftermarket replacement heater core

It looks like someone didn't take the time to properly replace the factory core and threw that in there instead.

It belongs there, just the factory one is a bit smaller than the afore mentioned unit.

On second thought, could that be the remains of an under dash AC unit? Minus the cover with the vents and trim?

Look close at lower left corner, back by the Firewall, you'll see a red, 5/8ths ID Heater hose running behind some sort of a home made looking mounting platform. It appears to be going to the ref coil.
what does bother me, there may not be a heater assy in there, the plenum box, air handler, Blend door, defroster outlets/ducts & that stuff might be gone or broken up.
Might want to keep an eye out for a deluxe OEM Heater assembly, HUH?

My wife tells me that A/C works fine, so if it was the remains of an under dash A/C unit, then that would mean he'd have had to put a new A/C in. But if he did that, then why would he have left the old one in? crazy people.

alrighty then, i see the heater hose, so if it's a homemade mounting platform, that would mean that i could just take it the heater core, and the mounting plate out and put a replacement one there? but that's only if the truck has all that good stuff that was mentioned. portable beer coller? that would make life better, until i get pulled over, then i'm going to be walking with my portable beer cooler and a little red wagon.

It looks like a Red Green installed heater core. You can tell by the duct tape.
