93 Taurus wagon with 4 wheell abs. Seems to work fine until the wheels lose traction, like when the suspension unloads going up a curb into a parking lot. Also happened a couple times driving on 3 inches of hail.
Car shudders and the brake pedal rises up and also shudders. If I release then brake again, everythings fine.
Hard braking in dry or rainy conditions is fine, if everything is level and smooth.
Opinions? car has done this since I got it last summer.
I think thats normal for ABS.
It works by sensing when a wheel will lockup and reacts by pulsing the brakes to prevent it.
It gives a shuddering or vibrating sensation on the pedal when it activates.
Anyone regulalry drives in icy conditions knows exactly how it feels.
Definitely normal for a '93 Taurus. The pedal will shudder to let you know that ABS has kicked in (and the road is slippery, so SLOW DOWN!), and the pedal may alternately rise or drop, depending on where it kicks in with relation to the pump. Releasing the pedal de-activates the ABS. That's one of something like 7 different ABS systems on the market, and if I recall correctly, it's considered one of the better ones. Now, the one GM was putting in Cavaliers a few years ago, with the rotating gear sets and electric motors- well, let's not even go there!
