65 and earlier were solid lifter engines. 66 and later hyd. It's pretty hard to tell on the later engines as they were pretty much std issue 390. A few versions with carb and compression changes. 66 thru 70 the 428PI was the big news for police packages. The 390 was still available though. So the later the engine is the more difficult it is to tell as they became less Police specific so to speak. There were also different level police packages. Interceptor, Crusier, Guardian, Sentinel, Deputy and others through the years. And with those packages different CI displacements drivetrain and suspension. Tell me more about the engine in question. Maybe we can figure out what you have.
well actually the only thing i can really question would be the block. it is from 64 that is what i know the intake is from 63 i think 4 v cast. the heads are d2 heads. and that is as far as i have gotten. im gonna go buy some valve cover gaskets and pull the covers and see if it has adjustble rockers if it has solid lifters. am i right if they were solid there would have to be adjustable rockers correct?
You can find adjustable rockers on hydraulic liftered motors unless it's a original factory motor that hasn't been altered then it will be a solid cam motor.
You can also look at the back of the block to see if it's a factory solid lifter block. At the rear cam plug there should be 2 unmachined bosses at 10 and 2 o'clock. On hyd lifter blocks those two bosses have either pressed in or threaded plugs. You can block the galleys on a hyd block though for solids and some of the PI service blocks were hyd blocks. The lifter galleys were plugged if it ran solids. Sort of a multi purpose block that could be used in other applications.
