Say I have a 76 F250 6 cyl and I have a little problem. When I turn the ignition switch on and off I get a spark. When I crank the engine I get no spark. The distributor does turn. If I leave the key on and unplug and plug the pickup connector I get spark. So does anyone think the pickup may be bad? Any help would be great.
Check the two wires on the starter relay (solenoid) mounted on the firewall near the battery. There should be two wires which plug in to the front of the solenoid, the terminal face the engine. Make sure they are both plugged in. One wire (I think is brown??) the wire which goes to the terminal marked "S" on starter relay give power to the relay when the key is in the "START" position and engages the starter motor. And the terminal marked "I" gives power to the ignition module and helps to power up the coil for spark while the key is in the "START" position .

Thanks Buck, I'll let you all know what I find. The truck is about 35 miles away and I can only get there on the weekends. But I'll write again and tell the story. I know after I get it home I have the breaks to do, the muffler, the driver's window and throw-out bearing and who knows what else. But project cars and trucks are that way.
Buck, AFAIK that setup was used on points ignition systems. I think it was modified for later systems and everything went thru the switch for more theft protection. My 78 does not use it.
I pulled the distributor today to replace the pickup and I noticed that I also have the 2nd post on the relay that has a brown wire on it. Thw relay is new and when the key is in the start postion there is 12volts on the second post, but still no spark. Anyhow I'll replace the pickup and see what happens. Maybe tomarrow I'll have the thing running or will start tracing the wireing out. I guess it's time to find a book on the truck.
Mil1ion, thanks for the schematic. When in the start position on the ignition switch, both the "S" and "I" has 12volts on them. I know that the ignition switch supplys the 12volts to the "S" terimal and that the "I" terimal is an output to the coil to bypass the current reduction resistor. What I don't know is if the "I" output (brown wire) is hooked up to anything. Someone else has done some mod's to the wiring. I measured the resistance on the old pickup and found it was around 2meg ohm (way too high). The new pickup measured around 600 ohms. If I move the wires on the old pickup I can get a reading around 800 ohms. So I think it must be bad. I have the distributor all back to gather (what a pain). Anyhow I want to thank you again for the schematic, and when the sun comes up I'll try again.
