is the 351w internally balanced or externally and what years did the balance change trying to match an 87 aod to an earlier 1970 351w

Most all Ford engines are externally balanced, except the sixes. Your 351w is externally balanced, and Ford never changed the balance through the years on that engine. The one you have to watch out for is the 302 around 1981.

Thread moved to "221, 260, 289, 5.0/302, 5.8/351W V8" tech forum. Should find more resources here for your question.

you need a flexplate from an 80's year crownvictoria running the 351w/aod combo. thats the only vehicle that used this setup. thats why those flexplates are so hard to find. your parts store will carrie one for sure and would be the better way to go. dont buy used cause you never know if its actually correct. also its a 28oz imbalance
