My neighbor has an '03 6.0L powerstroke with 11,000 miles since the last oil change. He is having trouble now with it stalling, and not starting when warm, but will start after it sets for awhile.
He was told by a 76 oil dealer that he could go 15,000 miles between oil changes if he used the Union 76 Royal Triton QLT. I checked the the API spec's for this oil and it has a CI-4 Plus. I never owned a powerstroke and only worked a couple but doesn't the anti-foaming agent in most oils breakdown after 5,000 to 7,500 miles???
what a joke, the oil places or dealers don't care if the engine quits. i never listen to anything they recommend. I have always changed my oil every 3000, whether it's my personal SUV, car, or my 7.3psd truck for my business. maybe with synthetic you can go farther, but the filter still needs to be changed every 3-4k. regular oil is not meant to go 15000 miles. all these car manufacturers that are saying the new cars can go7500 miles, really don't care because they want you to come back and buy another one someday. tell your neighbor to change it every 3-4k it's cheap insurance against engine damage and wear. do it himself, it's easy. oil change places rip you off and don't do a good job at all.
With the 6.0L motor holding 15 qts of oil, chagning it every 3,000 miles is costly and not needed. Ford says 5,000 for severe service and 7,500 for normal.
Most have found regular oil changes with dino or synth oil every 5,000 miles works best. Use a Motorcraft oil filter (Racor made) from Walmart or your local auto supply. They cost $19.99/ea.
Racor oil filters (Racor or Motorcraft) and a quality name brand diesel rated oil (CI4+ rated) is what you or your friend need - nothing more and nothing less!!!

Probably has to do with low viscosity. Too low and it will not fire the injectors properly. If stock filter is plugged, maybe low oil pressure is to blame?
He showed me the jug he has to re-fill when needed. It was a Union 76 Royal Triton QLT with a CI-4 Plus rating.
Does anybody know if the anti-foaming agents in this oil breakdowns over time. Will an oil sample tell you how suseptible your oil is to foaming up?
In my area, even with the 15 quart capacity, an oil change doesn't cost as much as 2 oil changes in a car. So, it is silly not to change the oil at 3000 or even 5000 miles. Besides, the time spent under the hood will open your eyes to other problems before they happen like hoses and belts. When I buy a vehicle, it is going to see at least 200k before I think of anything to replace it, so maintenance is critical. I think these dealers who peddle these claims know most buyers are lucky if they keep a vehicle 5 years. Maintenance is not a priority. If I were your neighbor, I would send the oil for analysis to see the likely damage that oil has done.

I don't mind, I get my oil at like 40 cents a qt, for rotella 1540, so the only real expense is the filter and that should be changed every 3-5 anyways. I do my fuel filter every other oil change, maybe that's too often, but Id rather change it too soon, than wait and ruin a pump.
don't listen to ford, they don't want your truck to last you 150-200k miles.
if you are going to have a truck that is anywhere between 35-55k dollars, I don't think oil changes are that expensive, even if you are buying oil at 2-3 bucks a qt.
I disagree with the dino oil not holding up.Caterpiller recommended that you change the oil every 250 hours or 12,500 miles what ever came first. My engine held 40 quarts and had one spin on filter.Engine was fine after 500k.I will not go that far on my 6.0 but 7500 miles is not out of the question.JMO.
11k miles, same oil and it's still running?!! That's impressive. It's one GIANT mistake to compare the 6.0 with most other diesels. The 6.0 uses the oil for far more than just lubricating the engine. I think Jeff (beachbumcook) has presented us with enough oil literature over time that it's safe to say that oil quality, both initial and over it's life, is far more important to the 6.0 than most other diesels. For the non-extereme use owner, oil changes every 5k miles seem reasonable, 7.5k miles might be stretching it, and 3k miles is overkill.
My experience has been to change it more often especially if you don't use it much. I try to keep the short trips to a minimum but some times it's necessary. At 7 to 8K miles a year 2 changes are not a problem especially with the oils importance with the injectors. Cats may not have that system...I'll continue to change mine at about 4000 and hope for the best...Good Luck. Just be glad you don't run a nitro car and chage it after every run....Torco 60 wt is expensive
Well it is justified.... Amsoil is the only synthetic oil company that promotes long change intervals to justify the higher cost. Mobil, Rotella and any other brand never says to go beyond the manufactures recommended intervals.
Amsoil is higher priced than other quality oils on the market and not sold as MLM products. If they are CI4+ rated and the same price then great... but my money is with Mobil or Rotella (for now).
But hey, enough said and lets not turn this into an "oil war"... We can all use what we want... but I get tired of reading people's posts on bad motor performance then read that they use questionable oil change intervals.
Doesn't Royal Purple promote extended oil changes with their product? I know a couple of guys running 15,000-20,000 between oil changes with a filter change every 5,000 miles with no problems. Anyone else doing this?
