new user of the forum here. Finally paid off my '03 base Ranger (2.3L Duratech, 5 speed, 3.73 rear end) and now it's time to put that money into upgrades. What I would like to do is have my engine produce 160 ponies and around 180 ft. lbs of torque. Is this doable on a consevative budget?
Guess then it's the big money with the Cosworth mods for the Foci with the same engine. :-)
Lach
Exactly! Not for a "conservative budget". In most cases, it's cheaper, more reliable, and safer, to buy a vehicle designed and built to be fast, something a
Ranger pickup is not, instead of doing mods.
Look, I'm not trying to "go fast" I want some more ftlbs of torque and a few more horses is all. Not to "go fast" but to be able to keep a certain speed on a hill with a full load.

swap another engine in. Making the 4 banger produce that much power would be quite an adventure. WHy not just swap in a 3.0L (eh...), 4.0L, now you're talkin', or maybe even a 302.
There's the obvious little things that will help. Intake, exaust, chip. That's about as basic as you can get. Intake and exaust will make no real difference by themselves, but combine the three of those and you'll feel a noticeable difference. But, there's no way you can get 160hp and 180ft-lbs on a budget. Getting Cosworth products made for the Foci would be your best bet. Good luck in your endeavors and let us know how it goes!
As for myself, I like to go fast, but I need a pickup bed. I'm sure that's what Lach is looking for as well.
The tried and true method over the years that results in a horsepower increase that is meaningful, noteworthy, and one that you will actually feel will be to increase cubic inches. Because of the effort and cost involved with a swap on a late model ride, you might consider the cost of trading vehicles for one with a larger engine.
I think Bill's got the right idea. My truck has a 4-cylinder (and one that's a lot slower than yours). It gets great mileage, and does what I need it to do almost all the time. Sometimes, though, it doesn't do it too fast. And some things it can't do. That's the price you pay for driving a heavy vehicle with a small engine, and the space to hold more than it can haul.
If you need a more powerful truck, buy one. Just my opinion.

Turned down a 3.0 when I bought the thing. Didn't give up much in hp and torque. 4.0....... great HP but gas mileage?
I do have a long block 302 H.O sitting around that needs rebuilt.......but I was hoping to find an older mustang for that one.
And, just so you know, I have owned a turbo'd car in the past, just putting one on this engine would be prohibitive in cost and headaches, plus the compression being a little high.
I'll just buy another Shelby Dodge. Never mind I managed to blow up my first one playing with the boost.

Lach - obviously some of the first few responses were from some guys who don't beleive in any bolt on mods, we have had a long standing debate over this. Those guys do not beleive in the most basic, common, proven mods (intake, exhaust, & chip/programmer), so read between the lines, if you know what I mean. The stuff Natebaker spoke of are the three most common mods to get a little more performance from you engine, but I don't think they will get you the numbers you were looking for. As Nate said, any one of those mods alone won't make a big, noticable difrence, but the three combined together will. Cosworth has some very intresting options for your motor, but they cost some serious bucks -

Lach, check out posts 47-50 in this thread. These are posts from guys that have tried the K&N mods, and have not worked, proving that Waves doesn't have a clue what he is talking about, as usual!!!
