erratic idle

I have owned my truck about a year and a half now and havent had many issues with it. Last summer i noticed at a stop light you could hear the motor become quiet then become loud and it would do it on and off. This lasted maybe 2 months and havent heard it again till 2 weeks ago. Well not its worse it will do it some times and sometimes you can feel the truck jerk like its missing while at a stop. Then sometimes you take off and it feels dead and sometimes like a monster with a ton of power. I put a buddies programmer on it 3 days ago and same results only magnafied.(never on more than a 75hp setting) when it was running good it would run reeeeeeeal good and when it wasnt then man i wanted to drive it off a cliff and idea as to what it can be? I havent done any of the recall work for the harness or reflash im trying to setup for within the next 2 weeks I am also going to do an oil change and fuel filter change since it is now due. Is there any sensor that is easy to check or should i have them do a diagnostic on it. Btw i have removed the programmer and reset the comp and its still there. Thanks for any help Aaron

I would say get those recalls done. That very well could be the cause. How many miles since the fuel filters were changed? Where are you getting the diesel? Could maybe be bad diesel. Let us know what the dealer finds.

Hi, When my truck did that same thing the EGR valve needed to be replaced. That solved the problem for about 3K miles then another EGR valve. Good luck. Jim

It has run good now for a couple days ???? I dont get it. Its hard getting an appointment as the local truck shop is always booked. What if unplugged the egr would that eliminate that as a poss. cause? Btw it has been 15000 miles since fuel filter change and i get gas at truck stops if that helps. Last question. My buddy put a sct xcal2 on his 05 and it sounds like a gas motor doesnt have that diesel sound why is that?

my truck would idle really funny like that too, if i was sitting at a stop it would go up and down, and when i would take off it would kind of jump up and down, i put an sct xcal 2 in my truck and the program upped my idle rpm and it stopped doing it, so what i think is that the idle rpm is too low.
