No-start troubleshooting

The other day my fiancee tried to start her 95 F-150 (351w, E4OD, 154k) and it acted electrically dead. She disconnected the battery cables, and when I got to check it out a day later the batter still had 12.5v. No check engine light.

It started up fine this morning, and with the engine running the alternator is pushing 14.9v. On shutting it down, I noticed a buzzing sound for about 10 seconds coming from the area by the ignition coil.

Could the coil be the source of the noise and/or related to the starting problem?

Can you define "it acted electrically dead"?

If nothing at all (no radio, no lights) then no the ignition coil can not cause it. Maybe it was a bad connection at the battery.
If you mean no spark then yes it can.

Not running with the key off "buzzing sound for about 10 seconds", no the coil will not cause this. Maybe speed control switch on Master Cylinder going bad, if so unplug it and take it to Ford.

I wasn't present when it wouldn't start. She was describing it to me over the phone, so my information isn't the best.

The battery had 12.4v when I first investigated it on Saturday, so unless it fully recovered its charge since she disconnected it that day (unlikely IMO) I'd say it's a connection or relay issue and not the battery itself.

I started it several times over the weekend and could find no evidence of any starting problems. I did hear the buzzing sound again though - it comes from the area near the ignition coil or the drivers'-side fuel rail.

Thanks for your input. I'm just going to wait until we have another 'episode' before worrying about it.

The buzzing might be coming from the Fuel Pressure Regulator, may need to change it.

what remains on or is still doing some sort of cycling or shut down process after the key is turned to off? fuel system? a/c compressor? notice anything else out of the ordinary? anything at all that can give more of a clue?

I had a werid on like this the other day on my 93

I replaced the silonoid with one I had laying around, nothing.

I pulled the starter and couldn't find my jumper cables so I took it to the auto shop and it checked out fine.

Put it all back togather and it worked fine.

the only thing I could think of is that it had a loose connection somewhere in the loop...

Good luck
