computer swap

Still not getting spark in 88 bronco 5.0. So i will be trying another computer from junkyard. Have small supply of ford trucks, but plenty of lincons and mercs, and thunderbird 5.0's to choose from. Is there any chance that any of those will be compatible? Anyone go through thist type of swap and any precautions.? Also, is the computer programable for upgrades or anything later on in life?

As for the computer swap, you need to find another speed density unit, that came from a Bronco with the AOD tranny, manual, or c-6. Some of the computers on the newer Broncos were meant for the E4OD tranny. You don't want that. As for computer upgrades, you would need to swap to mass air. The speed density computers don't like change. I also have a 88 Bronco and I am from Las Vegas. I am currently in Rapid City, South Dakota, but my Bronco is waiting for me at home. Good Luck!

Thumbs up

You should just check the original computer for codes, that would tell you if it was bad (I doubt it) or not. Checking for codes should allways be your first troubleshooting step.

It seems that many people are under the impression that ECA failure is a commonplace occurance. That is just simply NOT TRUE! You can test for a bad ECA if it becomes the absolute last resort but they just don't fail that often.

If you are absolutely certain that all other possible causes have been checked, disconnet the MLPS from the wiring harness. With the MLPS disconnected you should should have 12VDC at pin 30 of the ECA. If there is no voltage at pin 30, trace the wire from it to make certain it is not shorted to "ground". IF the wire from pin 30 is NOT shorted to ground and there is STILL 0VDC at pin 30, THEN the ECA has failed. Otherwise, if there is 12VDC present at pin 30 the ECA is fine.
