BTS Valve Body Install

Now that I have the 4 in MBRP installed, I might just tackle the VB. Anyone have any hints for me? The fluid and tranny filter is about 1000 miles old so I will reuse them and top off the fluid. The VB came with a transgo plate. Where do they all go? TIA.

here use this. use a clean pan to drain the oil into, and reuse it.

The BTS valve body doesn't come with installation instructions?

I am certain the BTS valve body comes with complete instructions. My Factory Tech valve body did.

It doesn't - Brian told be that when I ordered mine last week! He told me to call him - but I found this written up else where

Copy and pasted: - I did NOT write this up - just what I will use!

Here is the write-up I did for the BTS/VB install on the carolina PSD list.

You don't have to worry about mixing up bolts. There
are like 6 or 8 bolts that are all the same size plus
two nuts that go over 2 studs. The torque spec is
80-100 in/lbs and DO use a torque wrench. While you
are in there, take the time and and make sure all the
other bolts in other valve body and solenoid pack are
tight by setting your torque wrench to 80 in/lbs and
checking them.

If you do not own a torque wrench, this is a perfect
excuse to buy one and do not get a cheap chinese made
one. Get a decent quality one that is made in USA.
Sears Craftsman Torque wrenchs probably have the best
value vs quality so that is a good place to get one.
Tourque wrenchs are one area that you don't want pot
metal knock offs. That you sometimes can get away with
with other tools.

Oh, and back to installing the valve body. After the
pan is dropped, the filter is pulled down, and before
you start unbolting the valve body...STOP... pick up
the new BTS valve body and look at it. Then look at
your valve body in the tranny. Unbolt the Valve body
that looks identical to it. There is a reason I have
said this. Over the last two years I have been on The
Diesel Stop, there have been numerous people who have
went to install a aftermarket VB and screw up and
remove the small center one. This is bad because,
there are loose ball check valves in this one and they
will fall out and dissappear and then if you find
them, you will be stressed out trying to figure where
they go back because you don't have a diagram. If you
look at the BTS before hand, there is NO mistaking
which valve body to remove. Also once the correct
valve body is removed, before you install the Transgo
flow re-direction plate, remove the screen that is
between the tranny and valve body. Sometimes that
little sucker will drop right out when removing the
valve body, sometimes you got to reach up with you
fingers and turn it 90 degrees and pull down. After
it is pulled out, place the Transgo flow re-direction
plate in place then re-install that screen in the same
hole on the Transgo plate. Then stick new BTS valve
body up there and bolt in. Work the Torque wrench in
a stagerred pattern starting with the inner center most
bolts and work outwards. Torque in small increments
until you reach the spec. That about does it.

Also - very important -

You need to get a torque wrench appropriate for the job. You need one that reads inch-pounds. You really don't use a lot of torque on the valve body bolts!

I ended up having to buy yet another torque wrench for my wheels, as mine was not heavy dute enough for the task.

Wow. That seems odd. Still, I know it is a great product. Brian must have instructions - or, if not, other people here have done the mod.

I asked Brian about instructions when I got mine. He said that he's working on some, but didn't have them yet. No big worries, as I had already had my VB off before to do the sonnax, so I felt comfortable doing it. I didn't have any help from the forum (I don't know that anyone else here had done the BTS VB when I got mine) but the only question I had was about the small filter. I guessed on what to do with it (what Cat posted is correct) and got it right. So, it's a good thing that several of us here have done them and are able to provide any assistance needed.

I have tried several times to show a link to an install for a factory tech valve body installation from a website that I found but it keeps saying this thread is being moderated?? What's up! It is at supermotors.org under ford excursions and installs. I know it is not the BTS valve body, but the install would be the same I think? The picutures and descriptions are very well done as well.

It's probably some instructions posted on another forums' site. I've tried posting links to articles that would help folks also, but if the site they're on has forums, then it'll say "this is moderated" etc. and that part of my post is usually left out when the post finally shows up... Kinda stinks because there are great writeups that can be linked to.

It's in finally. I had to go to a shop to take a bolt out of the pan. After I drained the pan, all but one bolt would come lose. Tried flame wrench but no luck. Bolt was starting to round off. They tried a slightly smaller socket and hammered it in but it wouldn't go. They had to cold chisel it and finally it broke lose. After it came loose, it would turn out by hand.

Well, it is noticable but firm. Seems like less slippage.

Talked to Brian and he said he didn't want to put instructions because he wanted you to call him. Reason was that he would tell you which holes to drill out if you wanted to make the shifts firmer.

Aklim - did you drill the holes out at all - or did you just put the plate in the way it came?
