Not really a tip for the garage but may be useful and give you peace of mind. For those of you who have an older truck that doesn't have a hood latch/lock on it, you might want to try this. Ever lose or mis-place you keys? How about when you're way out in the boonies? You may not want to trust those magnetic key boxes to keep a spare key in, as it might fall off if you should hit a big bump or go off roading. Just tape a spare key to one of your truck water hoses. Use black electrical tape or duct tape and it looks like someone just tried to fix a hole in the radiator hose. If you loose your key, pop the hood, remove tape and there you go. I would suggest the bottom hose.
been there done it.
I used extra wire and tied it to a bunch of other wires and tucked it way down out of site.
Right now I was thinking of a unlock botton in the the "somewhere" and keeping a spare key inside "somewhere".
The company had bought a used 99 clubwagon and just resently we changed a flat and found a spare key back by the jack. looks like someone else had the same problem.
On ones that I can't pop the hood, I put them underneath the bumper, secured by a twisted wire in a small cranny. On another I put the door key unerneath a bed mat and hide the ignition key inside the cab.;-)
Heres a good spot. Inside the washer fluid tank. On my truck there is a screen to keep out debris from getting in the tank. And its the perfect size for the square headed key. The door key is hidden on the frame rails.
I keep a spare key in the console. But, for the doors, I keep a lockout tool I made (the first time I locked myself out) under the bedliner..
It's good to have a friend that's a locksmith, you can learn some stuff
I put one behind the liscense plate thru the bolt or screw. Usually a coin is all you need to take out the screw. We don't live in a metro area where license plate thief is a problem thou.
I just wire an extra key up near the back end of the frame by my receiver hitch. I use stainless wire and an aluminum key so it doesn't rust. The bummer is having to fish for it in the rain with all that road grime underneath.
W/my expedition I have a coded pad on my drivers side door, so I can keep one inside if need be. But, for p/u's, a good place to put one if you have a bed liner, is to hang it from one of the tie down hooks inside the bed so that it gis hanging between the bed liner and bed. Just reach in the hole and pull it out if you need it.
