ok gang,
here is one for the books. I am the proud owner of an ext. cab, long bed '97 f-150 with a cool 270,567 miles on it. We were camping earlier in the week, and had a great time. used this truck to pull a 24 foot camper. no problems. coming back, problems. my baby got us back home, but with issues. the #8 cyl. showes up as "misfire" on the computer. no compression (38 to 40). I have another 4.6L engine out of a '95 crown vic. I was told that the only differences is the intake, the exhaust man., and the oil pan. my eng. is of the windser plant. can anyone out there tell me if this is true or not? If its not, are the two engines enter-changable?
270K on a 4.6...nice. I love to see those big numbers. As far as the engines being interchangable, I really could not tell you for sure. But I would be willing to be they are not. I wold first check the ignition between the two...are both DIS systems? Or at least both have a distributor. Do you happen to know the vin code for the motor from the crown vic? If you do...I could probably cross reference it and tell for sure or not.
If they are both Windsors or Romeos, They don't interchange, You should be able to swap them and use all of the truck external parts. Have you checked to make sure that a cam follower didn't fall off?
I haven't yet. Haven't gotten into it yet to see what actually happened. Heard a "pop" sound, then wne tot running rough. Changed plugs and wires, and found #8 plug fouled. Put on computer and had #8 cyl. head overtemp and and #8 misfire fault. Did a dry comp. check--38. the rest on that side is between 128 to 134. Going to tear it down this coming tuesday and try to find out what happened. Maybe something simple. Let everyone know when I find out. But, again, I do have this crown vic motor just in case (I have to research it and see if it is a Windser or what).
