I have a 79 F250 with a C6 trans. It overheated the trans last year hauling a load of drywall (started making a low squealing noise). After it cooled, it did fine, but as soon as the snow is gone (it's my plow truck) I want to replace the filter/fluid. Do I need to have all of the fluid flushed, or can I just replace what I lose changing the filter? Never do much freeway driving, but do a lot of stop and go plowing and load hauling.
On my 78 C6 there is a 2”X3” door at the bottom of the bell housing held on with a sheet metal screw. Remove the little door and turn the flywheel over until you see a ¼” pipe plug in the torque converter. Removing it will empty the converter (its slow). Remove the pan and be ready for a mess. Flush out the cooling lines. Replace the filter and gasket. Fill and check level. Before you start be sure you have enough ATF and the right filter/gasket set.
I did this to my 79 Bronco's C6 a few months about, and it COMPLETLY drained. I want to say it took about 8 quarts to fill it up again. While I was down there, I got a new Chrome pan from ebay for $15 shipped to my house. The chrome pan does nothing for the truck, but every time I crawle under there I have to laugh b/c it is so out of place(a big shinny pan while everything else is coverd in dirt, mud, grit, grim, ect...).
