Swapping Rear Axles
Can a 71 F-100 use a rear axle from a 73 F-100? I know that the track is different but otherwise they seem awfully similar.
Are there many variations on the gear ratio? My 71 has an automatic and the 73 has a 3-sp manual. But I imagine that they're both 1:1 in third gear.

Swapping Rear Axles
Daniel, In 73 Ford widened the rear track so 72 is the last year that an axle swap will work, even though the center section can still be swapped fron newer models. You will have to check for big bearing or small before buying your new axle. Count the splines for 28 or 31 teeth.
All trannys have a 1 to 1 output in high gear that are not over or under drive. Rear end ratios for street run from about 2.75 to 4.11. The lower numbers are for crusing and the higher for pulling.

oughtsix, You would have to do your recomandation to swap the rear end not the axle.
