When I first got my van, it would sometimes hunt for idle & stall out in reverse.
now it starts normaly, idle goes to normal after slight warm up. but after driving a short distance the idle goes high & won't come down till I shut off the key.
when I restart It acts normal till i drive it again. I did remove & clean the idle air valve with no difference. Anybody have any ideas ? thanks, John
Thanks for the info. I'll try the quickey test in the morning & stop at the parts store & check for codes. I have a Chiltons manual but they really don't give you any info anymore. I'll let you guys know how i make out.
This weekend I pulled the IAC solenoid and cleaned the valve, pulled the air intake hoses and hosed down the butterfly valves, pulled and cleaned the spark plugs, checked the voltage and ohms of the TPS and IACBS, cleaned the throttle linkage, and most importantly, sucked a whole can of Seafoam through the brake vacuum hose.
I drove 150 miles back home, and every time I came to a stop and let the engine idle, the idle was so beautiful, it coulda made me cry. That low purr I've been missing for so long. Then this morning, back to normal.
Can't be a vacuum leak. The sensors are fine. Throttle body is cleaned in situ. Next step is to pull the throttle body and soak it overnight. I have to change the valve cover gaskets anyway...
Right now, it's still the same high idle, but occasionally I'll clutch in and it'll purr real nice. Probably next month I'm gonna take off the throttle body and intake and clean clean clean, and replace some seals.
I've done 5 or 6 cans of seafoam in the last two years that I've owned the truck, but I might even do another can of seafoam or TB Cleaner. The truck has 132,000 miles on it, and I guarantee that this is the first time anybody has cleaned out the intake.
If it's not seals, and not vacuum leak, and not TPS or IAC, or throttle linkage, I'm just gonna start taking things apart!
