Cable knock

Excuse my ignorance on the part name, but the speedometer/tach cable is causing a intermittent tapping noise behind the dash. I traced it under the vehicle and felt it vibrating. Is there a quick fix or is it part replacement time. Is it difficult to replace? Thanks for any help.

sounds like its either not fully seated into the back of speedo or the gear in the transmission is going out. does it drive funny, shift weird?

On a 94? Speedo on a 94 has no cable; its completely electronic... it uses information from the VSS and the PSOM module swings the needle accordingly and the tach uses SPOUT signal to determine engine RPM's. The only cables running under the truck are the shift select cable and the parking brake cable.

must be the shift select cable. Only problem is a hard shift into second, besides that its just the tapping sound behind the dash. I'm positive its not the brake cable

It could be the PSOM itself. While the signal is electronic the needle is still mechanical.
