transfer case

I have a 79 f150 supercab originally with a 351M. I cant figure out whether i have the np203 or np205 tranfer case. The tag that is supposed to be on it is gone. the shift pattern on it is 4hi-2hi-N-2lo-4lo. dont know if that makes any difference. the transmission is an automatic and the transfer case is married. Any help is appreciated.

sounds like a 205, 203 is a full time unit and your shift pattern would have low low lock high and high lock

I havent had anything but the np205 but I have been told with the full time 203 you wont have lock out hubs on the front axle.

low low lock high and high lock
Say that five times fast

I don't know about you guys, but I have yet to find 2 LO anywhere in the shift pattern of any 205 I've ever owned. It's pretty darn easy to tell a 205 from a 203. The 203 has an extra 8 inches on the front for the range box and the dead give away is that little 3 bolt cover that hides the end of the intermediate shaft shown in the pic kubota orange posted. It will have a big nut on the other side of the intermediate shaft as well. A 203 is chain driven and does not have an intermediate shaft so you won't find the cover or the nut on it.

NP205 only has 4hi, 4lo, and 2hi, he said it has 4lo, 4hi, 2lo, and 2hi, and i believe that is the NP203.
Correct me if i'm wrong.

Well, as gbret said (slightly revised) the pattern of a 203 if I am not mistaken is:

High Lock
High Full-time
Neutral
Low Full-time
Low Lock

Unless you have something like the Mile Marker part time conversion kit for the np203 then it will be:

4x4 High
2x4 High
Neutral
2x4 low
4x4 Low

Not sure on the hubs, someone once told me that full timers didnt have lockouts. Can anyone validate that?

Full time 4wheel trucks do not have locking hubs, hence the name "full time four wheel drive" here is a pic of the hubs on my 78 F-250 full time 4x4....If i remember right they are called drive slugs....i replaced my busted 203 for a NP205, but im leaving the hubs there cause this is an offroad only toy and i have no reason to unlock the hubs....

https://www.ford-trucks.com/user_gal...=64015&width=0

the shift **** says this..

Lock
High
Neutral
Low
Lock

Lock is the position where the front and rear axles are locked together for true 4wheel, in just high or low the Tcase's differential allows the axles to spin at different speeds to keep the drivetrain from binding on pavement....

Ah yes, the 203 has a differential inside it, doesn't it?

It really sounds to me like you have a NP203 with a MileMarker Conversion kit installed.
It may be a shaft conversion (best case) or a spider gear conversion installed. This conversion kit changes the normal NP203 shift patter from (the seat towards the dash)
Hi-Loc, Hi, Neutral,Low,Low Lock to the new patter of 4High,2High,Neutral,2Low,4Low.
You may reference my gallery to see what the back of a NP203 looks like on a 78F150 w/351M & C6 Auto.

I am in the process of converting my X-fer case right at the moment. Should finish it up today and will update the gallery in a day or so with pictures of the process.

Good Luck. Sounds like you have the best situation if the kit is already installed - you should have hubs on the front to allow you to lock or unlock the front axle - it saves on wear and tear....but these things last pretty good.

Sincerely,
Steven

Thank u Steven. I now understand. Yes, i do have a 203. I have manual locking hubs so it must have the conversion. Now i just need to figure out why it grinds when its shifted into 4 wheel drive. It was interesting getting off the sandhill the other night. What does it take to rebuild this thing and is there any way to adjust the shift linkage?
Thanks,
Syko
