Anyone have suggestions for a good shop to do a frame off restoration on my '72 Ford Custom. I live in NC, but will consider surrounding states as well.
Thanks, and I really envy you owners who can do it themselves.
You CAN do it yourself. That's one of the great beauties of these old Ford trucks -- they're simple enough that anyone with a basic knowledge of hand tools can handle a resto. All you need is a garage to work in, a couple of buddies to give you the occasional helping hand, plenty of time and patience, and, of course, good ole FTE.
I had a local body shop do mine 3 years ago and i am already saving up to do another. My dad and I actually did the frame off ourselves but had a body shop do the paint, body, interior and chrome pieces. It cost a lot of money. The thing that sucks about a body shop doing it is, you can't keep a real close eye on it like you could by doin it yourself. Just for refernce, body and paint cost me $5500. Alot of that is shop time.
I did a lot of the work on my 67 f100. I am a carpenter by trade and just really enjoyed learning metal working and body work. I did about 85% of the body work myself and let a body shop do the final massage and paint. He,s right about it being a great escape. It helps you keep your sanity as well as keeping some of that hard earned money in your wallet. I say try it you'll love it.
