Question Air Intake Mods

I searched and searched and couldn't find the thread I was looking for, so I'm going to just ask. (Ask and you shall receive...) I read a few months back that a good, cheap way to increase some air flow into the motor was to put in a better air filter, and drill a bunch of little holes in the housing so more air can get in. Are there any bad-news side effects that happen if I were to do this, or would it indeed increase airflow and horsepower some? The air would still be getting filtered, it would just be getting more of it. Let me know what you guys think! Thanks!--Hoss

Ionno bout drilling holes, but cutting out your soup bowl will help. Look At Daves Ram air setup in his gallery, you might want to try that as well.

What year truck? Turbo etc. Two ways to increase air flow, ram air or cowl air. Ram air requires cutting out around the D/side rad support, making a rectangle to round transition and running flex hose to your intake, cowl air involves cutting into the firewall near the brake booster, making a rectangle to round tansition that seals to the firewall and running flex to your intake. If you go to hypermax.c you can get a good idea of what cowl air looks like.

It's a 1984 E350 Van with a 6.9 non-turbo diesel. I'd like to try and avoid any cutting/re-routing and stuff if I can, but I'm intrigued by Dave's ram-air...I can't seem to find the pictures though. Any idea which Dave's gallery I'm supposed to go to? Link anyone? Thanks!

Awesome...Thanks for the link to the pics and stuff. However, I didn't really see an answer to my question. I read that if you drill about 20 1.5inch holes in the air cleaner housing, it will allow the motor to breathe easier. I just want to know if there is any way that it will damage anything. I'm thinking the only negative is that it will allow warmer air into the motor...However, I'm thinking that even though the air would be warmer, it would still be more air. And it doesn't look water would be able to get up inside there, and the air filter would still be filtering all the air going into the engine, so I'm thinking it will be ok. However, I wanted to get other people's opinions...

So the question is, can I drill out holes in the air cleaner housing without damaging the motor???

Thanks for all your input everyone. I'm new to the forum as of today, and everyone is WAY helpful. THanks for everything guys!

Hoss, Ive played with this for years! Driling holes is not the answer, IDIs need forced cool air, ie ducted to front grill. Daves photo shows what needs to be done, there are variations of what Dave has done, but the one thing they all have is fresh air ducting. What you want is cool dence air and lots of it. A free flowing exhaust will be a great improvement as well. Hopes this helps lol

I don't know your operating conditions, but if you get onto any gravel or dirt roads, the filter will get dirty in short order with the holes, as it gets [retty dusty under there going down the road. Taking advantage of the help from forcing air in is the best way to get more flow.

If you drill holes in the air cleaner 'box' you are pulling hot air into the system. You want cool air, there fore you take the air from out side the engine compartment.
