I fixed the severe pinging issue in my 4.0 Ext recently by cleaning my MAF sensor and my K&N air filter.
I wanted to measure my mileage to see if it improved. After a tank of mixed driving, I averaged 24mpg. That is the best is has ever been since I bought the van in '96. Is this possible? I'll calculate a few more tanks but I'm very pleased. Not only can I stay with the cheaper 87 octane now without all of the pinging, gas prices just went up again today. The payback from this little effort was great!
When my brother was bragging about his Honda's gas mileage, I used to add a little gas to his tank at night just to hear him brag more about its mpg later. After a month of this, I stopped doing it and he was scratching his head, tearing into his car, swearing up and down, wondering why the gas mileage had dropped off. Make sure someone is not doing the same to you
Oh what fun it was to harrass your younger brothers!
Years ago I knew a guy who would add gas to his neighbor's Rambler one night, then syphon some out the next night. Extra effective to alternate that way.
Vango,
i've got a molecular magnetic copper ring to install in your TB vortex. it aligns the air molecules so that more can slide thru. it also greases the outer valence electron ring so they don't stick to the cylinder walls
i suggest averaging fuel mileage over several tanks, fill can very easily 1-2 gallons
glad to hear you had success working on your Aero and increased the fuel mileage, engine life and performance....lots of satisfaction in that
so much better than dumping $600 at the dealer shop and it runs worse afterwards
It is possible to get that kind of economy, and people have acheived it without the use of a K&N filter. Cleaning th MAF would definately help. Removeing the carbon from the combustion chambers help use a lower octane more efficiently. With agood tune up, 22 mpg plus is obtainable on a 4.0. However individual tanks are not conclusive, you will need at least 3 tanks, preferable more than 5 to determine realistic economy under varied conditions. You can also calculate your economy to 2 place decimals with reasonable accuracy.
Probably an error in tank filling but You might get 20 if you are very good. I used to see 19 all the time. Mileage over at least 2 tanks is much more reliable, 5 is better of course.
Where did you get the copper, molecular, magnetic thingy, valence grease. I gotta have one!!
ken,
got a special this week on finely ground up teflon skillets, put in the oil just like SLIK Willie50.....improves the gas mileage just as much and much much cheaper
guarenteed to turn any engine into a perpetual motion machine....keeps on spinning even after turning off the key
I regularly get 21~22 in town with my 3.0 (94 XLT Extended), but I don't squeal any tires doing it. I've seen 26 on long trips, but I generally cruise at 65 on the interstate and don't care who passes me.
I get better mpg with my 460 powered "Slick" @ 17 avg than I get with my Areostar.
Of course My Aero won't do a 12.60+/- quarter mile under any circumstances, but I still have passion for it anyway. Unlike it's temperate zone counterparts, it's as solid as a Titanium, and rust free as a gold ingot. It's tight, quiet, runs well & has been well kept. It also has progressive suspension under it. It's a great ride.
The Aero has gotten 15.5, but the AVG over 220K has been right at 14.75 since 1993.
I have one other sticky, messy, problem. . . . . I'll start a thread for that.
the Aero has the "aero"dynamics of a freightcar going sideways down the tracks, it's that Big Bertha flat rear end that sucks back the freeway mileage....and poor mileage gearing in the diffs, most are 3.73 or 4.10 to make up for the small V6 low output engines
an XLT AWD w 7 adults and 2.56 diffs would do 0>60 in over 25 seconds and be painful if not dangerous on onramps....an XLT 3L with full load would have to be towed up to freeway speed with 2.56 gears
we are right in the middle of the pack for mid/mini vans, the Astro's are lucky to get 15 mpg with their gashog 4.3L, the latest 3.5L VTEC DOHC Honda V6 5 sp auto Odessey 25 mpg freeway empty
test drive a new 6L 6 sp manual Corvette, many get better than 30 mpg freeway....that's from a 400 hp engine that does 0>60 in 5.2 secs.....not very practical for a family though
