I drove my 90 ranger with 2.9 for 325.000 miles before it ran hot and cracked the heads last year. Figured the motor was probably too worn out to fix, so I retired it for a year and drove my 351 f-150. Since gas got so high I decided to bring the ranger out of retirement to drive back and forth to work. I ordered a new long block and got ready to install.
Now the problem!!
My son-in-law decided to be helpful and disconnected the old motor without pictures or marking anything. I managed to complete the swap and figure out where things go but when I run it there is a problem. The truck won't accellerate properly. As long as you feed the gas slowly it will gradually speed up -1/2 mile to reach 55 mph. It you dump the accelerator the accelleration quits. The truck doesn't nose dive like its running out of fuel or anything, it just quits accellerating. I could figure out the problem if it was a carberated truck but I quit mechanicing for a living about the time fuel injection started so I'm lost. Engine idles reasonably smooth just won't accelerate.
I tried to set the base timing but not sure if I disconnected the proper connector before setting. Connector I disconnected is attached to driver side wheel well next to coil. If thats the proper conector then timing is dead on 10 btc. I acts like maybe the timing isn't advancing properly?
Because the injectors are side by side with the same connectors, It's possible that I connected the injectors wrong -left bank where right bank should be etc. Does anyone know what color wire goes to which bank so I can check. Wire color on my injectors doesn't match wiring diagram colors in parts store manual.
No check engine lights now or in the past.
Anyone have any other suggestions to try this weekend?
well i would like to help but the truth of the matter is it could be alot of things, well first start of with does it missfire when the problem occours, smoke, rpms still move but truck doesnt, cold hot out side ng temp normal?????? help me help you basically
Truck idles fine, no misses when idling, no misses when accelerating, no missing when crusing just won't take the gas when trying to accelerate. Truck reaches normal opperating temp with good oil pressure and no smoking. Trans workes normally with the acception of higher shift points than normal due to increased throttle opening caused by trying to accelerate. Problem acts like timing not advancing when accelerating. Doesn't really act like a fuel problem because it doesn't nose dive when you open the throttle wide open although there is the possibility that I have the injectors wired backwards. I plan on checking the fuel pressure and if someone knows the wire color on the injectors, I will check the the injector wiring. I also plan on pulling the distributer and taking apart to make sure it's functioning correct. Any additional help will be greatly appreciated because I am not real familiar with working on fuel injected engines.
it sounds like the timing is retarded the connector your supposed to disconnect.. like 87xlt said is called the "spout" connector lookes like a fuse kinda usually grey and has two wires going into it. now its also possible that the cam timing is off... who built the engine and who put in the cam??? but the injectors wireing is not it it possibly wouldent run but definatly would missfire like crazy at idle running flooring everyt where if it was backwards
