How fast am I going?
My 85 f250 4x4's speedometer doesn't work. It has a 17 tooth gear on it in the transfer case. I put in a 20 tooth gear (out of my Ranger) and it worked.
I bought a new 17 tooth gear and it doesn't work. I thought that any gear would work, of course changing what the speedometer reads, but I can't get the 17 to work. Does anyone know what could be wrong?

Is the cable offset in the housing? Maybe it is a matter of turning the housing to make the smaller diameter gear engage. If it is not offset, look in the opening of the t-case to see if you can see wear or damage to the drive gear.

Thanks. I didn't notice if the gears were cut the same or if the housing was offset so I will check that out. I 17 tooth gear that was in the truck had minor wear on it but it didn't look that bad so I used the gear out of my Ranger just as a test. I did go and buy a new 17 tooth gear and it doesn't work either.
