front wheels not spinning

This problem occured 2 months ago but Im just getting around to trying to fix it. I was backing into an area that had deep wet icy snow. When I tried to move forward agian I couldn't budge. I was sitting a bit turtle on the deep snow and the snow I just drove over quickly became icy. At first my front tires where spinning like the rears. My buddy had metal traction grates that are made to be wedged under the tires so I could climb out of the ice. We put them under the front tires since thats where all the weight is. The tires spun a few time and then stopped turning. The front drive shaft was still spinning but not the tires. I was thinking maybe my hubs are tired. I have the fully manual ones. Once I was out the front wheels pulled me around in the snow just fine. It was only under the load of trying to climb the metal grates that they stopped. The very worst part is I had to get pulled out by a Dodge Dakota. I ideas fellas?

Please don't take this wrong, but are you sure that the other front wheel wasn't spinning?
Other than that, I think you are on the right track chasing down a manual hub that wouldn't lock.

I quadruple checked. Neither front wheel was spinning. The part that confusses me is several times that same weekend, after this incident, I was driving in deep snow and the front end pulled fine. I don't know if you've ever drivin one of these in snow but you will know when the front end isn't pulling.

But the driveline WAS spinning? Hmmmm, time to take the hubs apart and see what's up.

If one of your hubs are out it could act that way. If your wheels are strait neither one will spin or pull. If you are turning into the bad hub the outer good hub should still pull and look as if it is working until you straiten out then axle will try to tranfer the pull to the bad hub and neither will pull. I THINK this is correct.

I was in Purgatory Co. a few weeks ago and the first 2 days there they had 60" of snow. I actually almost got stuck in about 5ft of snow after I stopped to talk to a Highway Patrol. Reason I know it was 5ft was i had to climb out thru the window when the door wouldnt open. And when I hit the ground i was in snow up to my neck.! As I went to take off after sitting there for about 10 mins my truck just sank.! Only 1 of my front wheels would turn at a time unless I turned the steering wheel back and forth while dropping the hammer. I finally had to just hammer it really hard and go back and forth with the steering wheel to get the front tires to help pull.. I finally got out but it was almost really embarassing. One of those lockers for the front diff would be a MUST if i lived in that part of the country.
