It's possible, but difficult is an understatement. You'd need access to a complete parts truck. Engine (of course), tranny, and rear axle are different, although the rear might be okay if you don't use too much of the power of the 4.0. You'll also need most of the electronics from the 4.0 Ranger (engine wiring, PCM, a lot of stuff), preferably from the same year as your truck. This is a very involved process, it's not like the old days when you could swap a 170 6-cylinder in your mom's Falcon for a 289 in half a day.
Your easiest option, would be a turdo charger. T-BIRD trubo coupes from 85 to 88 had a 2.3 4 cylinder trubo, I'm not sure if the trubo will swap to the 2.5, or if you need to swap in the 2.3. The 2.3 allready has upgraded internals to handle the boost, also racer walsh sell a 2.5 turbo block. The folks over at RPS can help you out, there's alot of people on there forums that have done this swap, they even have a section for it. A turbo will give you the power of the 4.0 sohc, the truck will be lighter, and the mpg will be better. It's easier, and more cost effective in the long run, it's a win win !
