Ok today my brakes just stopped working right. I can usually stop really well now i gotta push it down to the floor and it takes forever to stop. Where should i start? Fluid? lines? pads? Someone please help me!!!
Bass, check your vacum pump, real easy re & re. If you have to add any brake fluid, you have find the leak [brakes dont lose any fluid] A couple of things to look for...corrorded brake line going over the crossmember for the rear brakes...2 if you have lost fluid, the master cylinder has a saftey mechasim in it and depending weather its front or rear brakes a sleeve slides to prevent all fluid lost , your brake warning light would come on if it was a major leak [bleed opposite of the leak on the m/c to center sleeve] . Brakes on these trucks are not hard to work on. lol
if the light comes on, fill the master up, then step on the brakes a few times. get out and look under the truck for a puddle of brake fluid. then start looking in the frame near the lines for the broken brake line
Ok I looked under the hood and it looks lke the seal on the master that connects to the power assist thing is bad, brake fluids leaking all down the front of the power assist thing. My dad just ran to the auto parts store to get me some fluid, it should last me another month or so cuz this happened before and i jus though it was low on fluid from when the guy before me had it. But i aint gunna risk it im jus gunna drive it to school n back tomorrow if it works then fix it on saturday or until i can get the part ordered. Im thinking about changing the Whol MC its lookin pretty bad, and a new one cant hurt.
Bass for the amount of work, cost and age of your truck, I strongly suggest replacing brake booster as well. Did mine last year when I was installing a/c dash , made a difference.
i added more fluid and now theyre really sensitive, barely tap it and it locks up, i got used to it though, just dont like it what could be causing this?? too much fluid??? air in the lines???
Bass, is the light still on, if it is, means most of your braking is going to the back brakes or your ebrake system is jammed, lots of other posibilities partner...but your have to start by finding the leak first. Repair or replace then bleed any air you might have.
