Saturday, May 13 Laps for Charity I at Texas Motor Speedway
At the Texas Motor Speedway (just north of Fort Worth)
I went with a local Ford Mustang group and had a blast the last few times. Basically, you pay $25 (goes to charity) and you drive your own vehicle around the track for three laps. Any street legal vehicle is allowed. We saw anything from motorcycles to minivans to huge SUVs. Basically, they run everyone in groups of 18-20 and we follow a pace car, single file. The pace car goes about 80-85 mph and you cannot pass anyone. There were four chase trucks the last time to make sure no one creates a dangerous situation. No need for helmets or any special gear. There's an age limit though. No infants in car seats. Check the TMS website for details. They usually post more info as we get closer.

It doesn't sound like much when you read it off a message board, but I'm telling you, driving on the banked curve is quite a thrill. You look out the your window and you feel like you're looking straight down. Most of us drove in 3rd or 4th gear to keep the RPMs high and we had our windows down. You get more of the speed effects that way. Plus, it's one of the world famous NASCAR tracks.
